The Potential of Energy Storage Systems for Smart Grids

Environmental concerns such as global warming have become world-wide issues. For this reason, distributed power sources, which utilize renewable forms of energy such as solar and wind power, and Smart Grids, which effectively utilize all types of power sources, are considered highly promising technologies.

Power grids realize stable power supply by optimally balancing supply and demand. But as the use of solar power and other renewable energy sources, which have unstable output, continues to increase, power supply to the entire grid could become unstable. This presents a variety of challenges.

To overcome such challenges, we need technology that “stores electrical power.” By storing electrical energy in energy storage systems, electrical load is equalized, promoting the efficient use of energy. Energy storage systems can also serve as back-up power sources in an emergency.

Energy storage systems are highly versatile and this is a technology that can meet the needs of various users and be utilized in diverse fields. These include power generators that use renewable energy, grid equipment like energy transmission and distribution equipment, as well as commercial facilities, factories and homes.

Technical Development of Lithium-Ion Batteries

NEC has developed and manufactured lithium-ion batteries for mobile phones and electric assist bicycles. We have also developed lithium-ion battery technology for electric vehicles.

We will use these lithium-ion battery technologies to further develop energy storage systems for household applications, commercial and industrial facilities and even larger-scale systems for power providers.

Energy Management Technology Using System Controllers

NEC's energy storage systems use system controllers to apply integrated control and unification to areas such as the operation of individual cells and modules as well as the connections between energy storage systems and grid power. We will also provide Energy Management Systems that utilize ICT for precise energy control using control software and the stabilization of external connections.

Energy Storage Technology and ICT

NEC is one of a few vendors in the world that has both energy storage technology and ICT. This enables the combination and efficient operation of energy management systems, from power grids and large scale commercial facilities to individual homes.

The NEC Group's History of Lithium-Ion Battery Development and Commercialization

NEC began developing rechargeable batteries for mobile phones in the early 1990s. In 1996, it commercialized the world's first manganese lithium-ion secondary battery and applied it to mobile phones. In 2000, it developed the laminated lithium-ion rechargeable battery for electric assist bicycles. Since then, the company has pursued development of energy storage technology for environmentally-friendly vehicles. From 2010, NEC's electric vehicle business moved into full swing.

Participation in Field trials

NEC and Enel Distribuzione (ENEL), the distributor for Enel SpA, the leading Italian power company, have agreed to build a strategic partnership to develop new Smart Grid technologies and solutions.
The two companies will build an energy solution system based on lithium-ion batteries developed by NEC and ENEL's power distribution network. Field trials will be conducted in Italy within the framework of the agreement. Each company will leverage its respective technological and operational assets to realize Smart Grids and Smart Cities.

NEC is collaborating with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), the largest electric power laboratory in the United States, to evaluate a large energy storage system that utilizes NEC's lithium-ion battery technology. R&D aims to expand the scope of the system's application and realize a large-scale energy storage system that offers high-level reliability, large capacity and long life.
